He is sent to Officers Candidate School at Camp John B. Gordon and is commissioned as a captain in a rifle company. He leaves behind his lovely wife, Loralie, and his two young daughters, Annie and Millie, as he leaves home to serve in the infantry.

Loralie becomes restless and lonely in his absence, though, and seeks the companionship of a young and handsome railroad engineer. Stephen is later deployed to France with the 325th Infantry Regiment. At the Western Front, on the evening before his regiment is to attack the German troops, he receives a letter from his trusted friend in Royston.

Stephens friend informs him that Loralie has been unfaithful to him and that the paternity of his infant son is in question. A terrible fury fills Stephens soul, and a fiery anger consumes his heart. Stephen has command of a crack rifle company, and Uncle Sam has placed an Enfield Rifle in his hands. He blames the War and the Germans for his separation from his wife, and he vows to make the Kaisers soldiers pay.

When they attack the next morning, Stephen prays that God will give mercy to the German troops, for he intends to give them none.
